Dry Wines

If we wanted to get technical, a "dry" wine has no noticeable taste of sweetness (majority of wine tasters start to distinguish sugars around an overall content of 0.5% to 0.7%). Although, an elegant wine can have sweet aromas, and still taste dry. A dry red wine can give you a slight "pucker" and impression of dryness on the tongue. Most of the traditional red wines such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot are dry. For white wines, "dry" is more difficult to explain but the most popular white wine such as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc are dry. In other words a "dry" wine has no residual sugar. It has been completely aged to ensure that there are no residual sugar remaining after fermentation.
